Navigation Activity (4 of 4) - Field Trip: Students & Instructors - Raging River State Forest

This activity is for students of the Foothill Wilderness Navigation - Winter 2020 course who were unable to complete the March field trip due to the COVID-19 shutdown.

Before you can sign up for this Field Trip as a student, you must be registered in the Foothills Wilderness Navigation - Winter 2020 course and have successfully completed the following activities:

  • Online Map & Compass
  • Online GPS
  • In-Person Workshop

Summary

This field trip will be run in accordance with the Mountaineers COVID-19 Guidance in effect as of September 1, 2020. Please see the COVID-19 Response page for details.

This is a full day event at the Raging River site near the intersection i-90 and State Hwy 18. Carpooling is NOT encouraged there will be ample parking at the trailhead.

All field trip materials (maps etc.) will be provided at the trailhead.

Checklist

  1. You'll need to be in reasonable physical condition since you'll be gaining about 500 ft of elevation gain and 3.0 miles of hiking, with 1.0 mile being off trail.
  2. Bring the Required Equipment. Come prepared as you would for a scramble or hike in varied weather, but please leave the technical gear (helmet, ice axe, etc) at home.
  3. Bring over-the-ankle high-top boots, a waterproof outer layer, warm clothes in layers, the 10 essentials, lunch, etc.
  4. Review the Field Trip packet located in the Course Materials tab of the Course listing. Hardcopies will be provided at the trailhead.
    Bring your compass. Unfortunately you can't share a compass with someone during the Field Trip.
  5. Smartphone with Gaia GPS installed with route/track, waypoints and and field trip map loaded. Ensure that your device is checked and ready e.g. fully charged battery, screen works, weather proofing etc. Waypoint file (GPX) will be attached to your Welcome Navigators email.
  6. Standalone altimeter (calibrated at the trailhead) or smartphone altitude function within Gaia GPS.
  7. Bring a couple of gallon size ziplock bags for protecting your maps and other documents. Maps will be provided at the field trip site
  8. Bring a sharp pencil.
  9. Current declination set on the compass and confirmed.
  10. An understanding of emergency communications procedures and devices are understood.
  11. Emergency communications device on hand (minimum whistle)
