Before you can sign up for this Field Trip as a student, you must have signed up and paid for the "Wilderness Navigation Course - Foothills"  have scheduled the following prerequisite components:

  • Online Map & Compass
  • Online GPS
  • In-Person Workshop

All three components must be finished before the field trip. Instructors do not pay a course fee.  

Summary
This is a full day event at the Raging River site near the intersection i-90 and State Hwy 18. Carpooling is strongly encouraged due to limited parking space, so please specify your carpool preferences in your personal profile.

Checklist

  1. You'll need to be in reasonable physical condition since you'll be gaining about 1000 ft of elevation (roughly half the elevation for Tiger Mountain) and hiking 3.0 miles with 1.0 miles being off trail. 
  2. Bring the Required Equipment. Come prepared as you would for a scramble or hike in varied weather, but please leave the technical gear (helmet, ice axe, etc) at home. Bring over-the-ankle high-top boots, a waterproof outer layer, warm clothes in layers, the 10 essentials, lunch, etc. All materials will be provided at the meetup.  Required Equipment tab provides more information on equipment.  
  3. Bring your compass. Unfortunately you can't share a compass with someone during the Field Trip.  
  4. Smartphone with Gaia GPS installed with route/track, waypoints and and field trip map loaded. Ensure that your device is checked and ready e.g. fully charged battery, screen works, weather proofing etc.  
  5. Standalone altimeter (calibrated at the trailhead) or smartphone altitude function within Gaia GPS.
  6. Maps, pencils and ziplock bags for protection your maps and other docs. will be provided at the Meetup. 
  7. Current declination set on the compass and confirmed.
  8. An understanding of emergency communications procedures and devices are understood.
  9. Emergency communications device on hand (minimum whistle)

Instructors
Come prepared to instruct students who likely have a wide range of experience:

  1. Bring your Instructor and Student Info packet.  Copies of these will be emailed to you prior to the Online Instructor Training session. We will also have paper copies on hand at the Meetup.  
  2.  Review the material prior to the Field Trip.
  3. Bring your compass, GPS and Altimeter and your best attitude.
