Meeting place and time information will be provided to registered students via the "Welcome Navigators!" email which will be sent at least one week prior to this activity
Before you can sign up for this Field Trip as a student, you must have signed up and paid for the "Wilderness Navigation Course - Foothills" have scheduled the following prerequisite components:
- Online Map & Compass
- Online GPS
- In-Person Workshop
All three components must be finished before the field trip. Instructors do not pay a course fee.
Summary
This a small group Field Trip designed to meet current state, county and Mountaineers Covid-19 guidance. A detailed description and student requirements will be provide to registered students a couple of weeks before the scheduled start dates.
It is a full day event at the Raging River site near the intersection i-90 and State Hwy 18. Carpooling with individuals outside your household is NOT encouraged.
Checklist
- A mask is required
- You'll need to be in reasonable physical condition since you'll be gaining about 1200 ft of elevation (roughly half the elevation for Tiger Mountain) and hiking 4.0 miles with 0.5 miles being off trail.
- Bring the Required Equipment. Come prepared as you would for a scramble or hike in varied weather, but please leave the technical gear (helmet, ice axe, etc) at home. Bring over-the-ankle high-top boots, a waterproof outer layer, warm clothes in layers, the 10 essentials, lunch, etc. The Field Trip Student Packet within the Course Materials tab, and also the Required Equipment tab provides more information.
- Review the Field Trip packet. This is in the Course Materials tab of the Course listing. We will hand out an abbreviated hard copy at the In-Person Workshop.
- Bring your compass. Unfortunately you can't share a compass with someone during the Field Trip.
- Smartphone with Gaia GPS installed with route/track, waypoints and and field trip map loaded. Ensure that your device is checked and ready e.g. fully charged battery, screen works, weather proofing etc.
- Standalone altimeter (calibrated at the trailhead) or smartphone altitude function within Gaia GPS.
- Bring a couple of gallon size ziplock bags for protecting your maps and other documents. Maps will be provided at the field trip site
- Bring a sharp pencil.
- Bring a completed pre-trip planning document from the eLearning Workshop and leave a copy at home.
- Current declination set on the compass and confirmed.
- An understanding of emergency communications procedures and devices are understood.
- Emergency communications device on hand (minimum whistle)
Instructors
Come prepared to instruct students who likely have a wide range of experience:
- Bring your "Instructor Field Trip" packet. If you haven't obtained one at a recent workshop, one can be emailed to you before the field trip. We will also have paper copies on hand at the field trip.
- Review the "Student Field Trip" packet as well, particularly for driving directions. It is available in "Course Materials" on the course page.
- Bring your compass, GPS and Altimeter. Maps for the Raging River State Forest area will be provided at the field trip site.
