New Hike-Urban Walk-Backpack Leader Seminar - Mercer Island Public Library

This 2.5 hour evening seminar provides experienced hikers or backpackers information to help them become an effective hike or backpack leader for the Mountaineers. This seminar is a pre-requisite (along with a mentor hike/backpack and committee approval) to becoming an official hike or backpack leader for the club, and prospective leaders from any branch can get credit for this seminar toward their leader certification. IF YOU'VE ALREADY ATTENDED THE SEMINAR TO BECOME A HIKE LEADER YOU DON'T NEED TO TAKE IT AGAIN TO GO ON TO BECOME A BACKPACK LEADER UNLESS 3+ YEARS HAVE PASSED.

The session starts promptly at 6:15PM, in the large meeting room to the left inside the main double doors at the Mercer Island public library, 4400 88th Ave SE, Mercer Island, WA 98040.  (Google map location https://goo.gl/maps/52pMBkRLtvF2. We will finish by 8:45PM.

This 2.5 hour evening course provides experienced hikers or backpackers information they need to become an effective hike or backpack leader for the Mountaineers. This course is a pre-requisite (along with participation in at least 3 Mountaineers hikes or backpacks, a mentored lead hike/backpack and committee approval) to becoming an official hike or backpack leader for the club.  Past and current hike or backpack leaders as well as those interested in becoming a new leader are invited to participate, and you must be a Mountaineers member to lead. The workshop is free and open to all Mountaineers members, but please register online so we can schedule the right number of instructors.

Seminar objectives:

  • Know the kinds of trips you want to lead, and how to attract participants who have the same interests and capabilities.
  • Understand and be prepared to carry out the roles and expectations of a hike or backpack leader for the Mountaineers.
  • Be prepared and confident to handle common challenges you will encounter leading groups on the trail.
  • Be ready to take the next steps to become a hike or backpack leader for the Mountaineers.
A major part of the session is built around discussion about common leadership decision-making challenges from real-life leader experiences.
