April Hikes: 2.5 - 5 miles, 250 - 1,000 feet gain - Seward Park

Enjoy a 3- 3 1/2 mile hike through the largest stand of old-growth trees in Seattle, with some waterfront hiking too. The best of both hiking worlds. Seward Park is a 300 acre oasis, occupying Baily Peninsula on Lake Washington -- so we'll have water, city and mountain views too. Let's try to find one of the two eagle nests if we can.

  • Easy
  • For Beginners (Getting Started Series)
  • Mileage: 3.3 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 125 ft
  • Pace: 1.5-2.0 mph

Meet at 1:30 p.m. at the park's Audubon Center (which has restroom facilities) at the southwest corner of the park, near the main entrance off Lake Washington Blvd. South.  As with many places, weekend parking can be a challenge.  Parking "tips" will be offered closer to our hike day.

Look for the guy in the orange cap (a/k/a -- me).

Seward Park is a splendid city park of almost  300 acres, second in size to Discovery Park among Seattle parks.  It's distinction is having the city's largest stand of old-growth forest, almost 120 acres worth.  It can feel like one is deep in the forest, miles and miles away from any city. It has a number great "upland" hiking trails of forest and fern, and there is a lakefront walk around the whole perimeter of the park.  We'll do a bit of both.

Will we get really lucky and see one of the parks elusive Mountain Beavers?  Or some of the 100 bird species identified at the park?
