August Hikes: 4 miles to 7 miles, 600 to 2,000 feet gain - Ptarmigan Ridge

This hike counts toward your monthly required GoHike course hike for August. NOTE: This is a dog-friendly hike. Please see details below for bringing a dog.

COVID-19: Learn about our most up-to-date guidance for participants and leaders on our COVID-19 Response page. All participants and leaders must agree to the COVID-19 Code of Conduct before participating in this Mountaineers activity.
  • Moderate
  • Casual
  • Mileage: 6.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 1,000 ft
  • Pace: 1.5 - 2 mph

Meet at Artist Point Trailhead at 7:30 AM. The reason for the early start is to avoid crowds later in the day since this is a very popular area. NOTE: This means a roughly 4:30am departure from downtown Seattle to be on time (with no stops on the way). There are overnight accommodations on the way to the trailhead best researched ASAP. Details later on the hike itself.

The Trip: This trip will be by-design laid back and casual in nature, and our pace will be based on our slowest participant (which might be me 🙂). I promote frequent stops for photo opps, or just to grab a snack or drink of water; barring safety concerns, we will be in no rush. Please note if you find yourself to be a fast-paced hiker who frequently passes others on trails, and/or finds yourself frustrated by slower hikers in your group, this might not be the trip for you.

Dogs Are Welcome but Here Are The Requirements: On sign up, if you are bringing a dog you must respond to the requested information via the sign up process and/or any follow up emails. Based on these details the Asst Lead and myself will approve the participant and their dog. Only 1 dog per participant will be allowed.
Dogs must not be aggressive to people or other dogs or triggered by small/tiny dogs, and must have prior hiking experience with similar mileage/footing/elevation to the hike we're doing.
Hikers bringing their dog should carry food, water and first aid kits for their dog. Dogs MUST be on leash and all waste will be packed out. Dogs should be up to date on vaccines and flea/tick medicine.
