This 2.5 hour evening course provides experienced hikers or backpackers information they need to become an effective hike or backpack leader. This course is a pre-requisite (along with a mentor hike/backpack and committee approval) to becoming an official hike or backpack leader for the club. We cover the major Mountaineers hiking standards and processes, but focus most of our time on outdoor leadership "soft skills" including scenario discussions around some typical leadership challenges. Past and current hike leaders as well as those interested in becoming a new leader are invited to participate. The workshop is free and open to all Mountaineers members, but please signup online so we can anticipate group size.
If you already are an experienced leader for other Mountaineers activities and have been on recent club hikes or backpacks, you may be able to gain equivalency and become a leader without having to attend the class. Contact the Foothills Hike/Backpack Committee chair Cheryl Talbert at cascadehiker@earthlink.net to see if we can make it happen!
