Backpacking Building Blocks Student-Only Backpack

Field trip: Backpacking Building Blocks (B3) Course

Backpacking Building Blocks Student-Only Backpack - Olympic Coast North: The Shipwreck Coast

Spend two nights on the sea stack-studded Olympic Coast! Friday and Sunday we’ll hike 4 short miles in and out, and on Saturday we’ll take a day trip north to explore the beautiful sandy beaches (and also some lousy rocky ones). This field trip will give B3 students the opportunity to try out gear and new skills on an easy overnight backpack with an experienced mentor.

Olympic National Park Wilderness Information Center in Port Angeles, WA at 9:00AM sharp!

The coast is a wild place, there will be downed trees and boulders to navigate around and some beaches are more rock and gravel than sand. Still, the good parts make it worth it, it is a beautiful and otherworldly place. Tannins in the water will give it a brown discoloration regardless of filtering (it’s harmless). There’s a rope-assisted headland crossing which will be our turnaround point heading north unless the group is feeling saucy (I’ve done it several times, it’s a cinch).

Bear canisters are required (fortunately there are no bears on the beach, it’s just for raccoons - phew!).
