Backpacking Building Blocks Student-Only Backpack

Field trip: Backpacking Building Blocks (B3) Course

Backpacking Building Blocks Student-Only Backpack - East Baker Lake

This field trip will give B3 students the opportunity to try out gear and new skills on an easy overnight backpack with experienced mentors. Creeks, quaint bridges, mossy old trees, snow-capped peaks and of course, Mount Baker, are some of the main attractions of beautiful Baker Lake. Priority given to Luis’s and Karla’s B3 mentor group.

  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 11.2 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,896 ft
  • Pace: 1.5-2mph

We will meet at 7:00 AM sharp at the Birdsview Brewery in Concrete, WA. There is cell reception there and we can coordinate.

From there, we will caravan 27 miles NE to the Baker River Trail.

There’s a privy at the trailhead.

NW Forest Pass required.

Early meeting time to secure the few campsites at Silver Creek.

WTA link to East Bank Baker Lake here.

There are bear lockers at campsites, so no need for a bear canister, a Loksak should be sufficient.

Note that the mileage is from the trailhead to the Silver Creek campsites, and back to the trailhead. The elevation gain is the total accumulated elevation gain, and it’s fairly gradual, with a few steep sections.

Since we will be arriving early, once we set up our campsites we can choose to explore further south along the trail with a day backpack.

Inclement weather will cancel the trip; constant precipitation that leads to 1 inch of rain per day, sustained high winds, or wind gusts that make it dangerous to be in a tent close to trees.

Weather information for the area can be found here.

We will follow all Mountaineers Protocols. Bring a face mask and hand sanitizer.
