  • For Beginners (Getting Started Series)
  • Mileage: 1.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 50 ft
  • Pace: 1.5 mph

Meet in the west parking lot of Lake Sammamish State Park promptly at 10AM to meet your group.  The session will last 3-4 hours, though it could go longer so don't make other plans for the afternoon!

As the culmination of the series of informational and hands on sessions that have come before, in the "Practice Camp" field trip students will have the opportunity to try out the key skills and approaches with their own gear and/or observe/ask questions of others in their mentor group in an actual hike that will end with setting up camp, treating water, preparing a backpack meal and then packing up and walking back.  The practice day will be with your small mentor group and will follow all of the Mountaineers procedures described for small group activities in phase 2.

Your mentor will provide you with more details and a map for the day soon.  Be sure to read the Required Equipment section below.

Required Equipment

Please pack your pack with the gear, clothing and other essentials you'd expect to carry on a real overnight backpacking trip, including a liter of water and food for one meal which you'll prepare during the camp.  Be ready for wet weather as the camp will proceed rain or shine.  If you don't have your own gear yet or are still missing a few key pieces, that's perfectly OK - we'll focus on observing and discussing the range of different gear contributed by our mentors, helpers and fellow students.

A mask must be carried on your person so that you can raise it whenever you need to go close to someone else, and you must also carry hand sanitizer sufficient for use after toileting, before eating, and before and after touching anyone's else's gear.  If you don't have these items when you arrive, you will not be allowed to participate.
