This is an AIARE 1 course. The course includes study in avalanche and snow mechanics, stability analysis and snow-pit techniques. This course includes  group and individual route-finding, search techniques and advanced beacon use. The course also includes study and practice of group interaction and communication, often the cause of avalanche incidents.The class consists of four evening sessions held at the Mercer Island Community Center on January 6th, 8th, 13th, and 15th. The field sessions are January 17th and 18th these field days run from 7am to 5pm please plan accordingly. You will be asked to fill out a student experience profile that will help us team you up with students of similar ability and physical conditioning. The field sessions will allow you to practice what you have learned in a real  backcountry setting. This course is ski and snowboard oriented.

AIARE requires that you complete all four evening and both field days for certification.

Prerequisites: Basic Navigation or equivalent. Students are encouraged to take a Basic Avalanche class prior to the start of lectures

Required Equipment

Avalnche beacon, three antenna recomended please no analog beacons. Avalnche shovel and avalnche probe. If your not sure about your beacon we will discuss all of this in the first session so that some can make an informed buying decision. 

Optional equipment. Snow saw

Appropriate backcountry ski / snowboard equipment. Skis / board, climbing skins, or snow shoes for boarders.
