This is the first of three activities required to complete our Wilderness Navigation course.

To Sign Up – Students (Instructors see below)

Before you can sign up for the Wilderness Navigation: Online Map & Compass (Required Activity 1 of 3), you will need to have signed up and paid for the Everett Wilderness Navigation course. The link to the course is on the right of this page.

This is required activity (1 of 3) of the course. It must be completed before proceeding in the course and to the next activity, Wilderness Navigation: GPS & Digital Navigation (Required Activity 2 of 3).

Activity Goals

After completion of the activity, the student will have a good overview and acquired navigation skills needed in an outdoor setting. These include map and compass basics, the UTM coordinate system, measuring and plotting bearings on a map, introduction to GPS and altimeters. Trip planning and staying oriented in the field will also aid to the student’s knowledge of outdoor travel.

Equipment

Please refer to the course main page, under the Required Equipment tab for equipment needed to complete this activity:  Book, Computer, Map and Compass. These will need to be obtained ahead of starting this online activity.

Accessing the Online Activity

On the first day of the two-week time to complete the activity, a link will be emailed to you to access the presentation. There will be instructions with this on how to run the presentation, which also includes links to videos, websites, and quizzes. At that time, you will be assigned an instructor to help with any questions you have concerning the activity.

You have two (2) weeks in which to complete this activity so you can work at your own pace. The estimated time to complete the activity will vary but could be estimated to be 4-6 hours.

Rescheduling or cancellations

If you have any issues completing the activity or need assistance with scheduling, please be sure to contact your instructor.

However, it is important to remember that this activity will need to be completed before proceeding to Wilderness Navigation: GPS & Digital Navigation (Required Activity 2 of 3)

If you need to cancel the entire course, you may cancel your sign-up on the Mountaineers website.

Instructors

Instructors do not need to pay for the course or this activity. Please see Equipment above for equipment requirements for the activity. You will have access to the activity ahead of time to prepare. Please review and be familiar with the content. There may be student quizzes, homework, etc. to go over.
