This is the second of three activities required to complete our Wilderness Navigation course.

To Sign Up – Students (Instructors see below)

Before you can sign up for the Wilderness Navigation: GPS & Digital Navigation (Required Activity 2 of 3), you will need to have signed up and paid for the Everett Wilderness Navigation course. The link to the course is on the right of this page.

This is required activity (2 of 3) of the course. It can only be completed after Wilderness Navigation: Map & Compass (Required Activity 1 of 3) has been completed. It will also need to be completed  before Wilderness Navigation: Trip Planning Workshop and Field Trip (Required Activity 3 of 3).

Activity Goals

After completion of the activity, the student will have a good overview of what GPS is all about:  GPS systems, devices, core functionality, limitations, and other forms of emergency communication and how GPS can be used to aid in outdoor navigation.

Equipment

Please refer to the course main page, under the Required Equipment tab for equipment needed to complete this activity. This activity requires the use of a smartphone. You will need to have the Gaia GPS Premium navigation app installed on your device. The Mountaineers has a free subscription to this for one year which you can access here. The instructions and examples in this activity are for an IOS. Android is acceptable; however, there will be slight differences in the app. You will also need access to a computer with an internet connection.

Accessing the Online Activity

On the first day of the two-week time to complete the activity, a link will be emailed to you to access the presentation. There will be instructions with this on how to run the presentation, which also includes links to videos and websites, quizzes, and an outdoor exercise. At that time, you will be assigned an instructor to help with any questions you have concerning the activity.

You have two (2) weeks in which to complete this activity so you can work at your own pace. The estimated time to complete the activity will vary but could be estimated to be 4-6 hours.

Rescheduling or cancellations

If you have any issues completing the activity or need assistance with scheduling, please be sure to contact your instructor.

However, it is important to remember that this activity will need to be completed before the Trip Planning Workshop and Field Trip.

If you need to cancel the entire course, you may cancel your sign-up on the Mountaineers website.
