Rock Instructor Clinic

Covers topics to effectively and safely teach rock climbing to groups of beginners in a single pitch environment.


  • Basic rock anchors and their application. Able to build pre-equalized and self-equalizing anchors on multiple points.
  • Some prior experience placing trad gear. Although leading is not required in this clinic, we'll be building gear anchors. 
  • Comfort and aptitude top-roping up to 5.8 in an outdoor crag environment. 

The following topics will be covered.

  • Gri-gri techniques including belay from above, lowering,  moving about top-managed environment / instructor line, climber assist, counter-weight rappel. 
  • Extended knot vocabulary; BHK, double loop 8, in-line 8, bowline on bight and their application(s). 
  • Advanced Anchors / Station Rigging; J-Tree, Backside, Three-In-One. 
  • Risk Management; institutional vs. recreational standards, keeping system closed, terrain/route evaluation.
  • Rescue/Assist Essentials; climber 'pick-off', 3-1 haul (climber assisted and non-assisted)
  • Top Station Management; Movement between master points, transition to rappel, belay from above and lowering with munter + backup, securing students and instructor.
  • Anchor / Rope Management:  ideal positioning of master-point(s), master-point extension, overall cleanliness and ease of use.

Required Equipment

Standard rock cragging gear including the following. 

  • Gri-gri
  • Cordelette; 2 recommended
  • One or two smaller cord loops (hero loops)
  • A light trad rack (few mid size cams BD 2 - 0.5, set of stoppers, etc)
  • Several locking biners (at least 4-5)
