Have you developed your mountaineering skills and experience to the point where you’d like to plan and lead your own trips? Do you have good organizational, communications, time management, risk assessment & group dynamics skills? Are you “not sure”, but curious in learning more about what it would eventually take to qualify as a scrambling Trip Leader?
Being just two hours, the session will certainly not be an attempt to discuss & develop all the skills of becoming an effective leader. However, it will provide insight into what skills are needed and valuable, how to get to that point with a minimum of “learning lessons the hard way”, and will provide a step-by-step guide on using the Mentored Process to qualify as a Scrambling Trip Leader.
The orientation is open to Scrambling & Basic Climbing graduates, as well as Scrambling & Basic Climbing students.
Trip Leader requirements are as follows:
> Be a graduate of the Alpine Scrambling or Basic Climbing class
> Competent in wilderness first aid
> Participate in instruction of at least one Alpine Scrambling field trip
> Attend this Trip Leader Orientation (or an equivalent or broader club leadership seminar)
> Fulfill assistant leader role on one scrambling trip
> Successfully lead one mentored scramble trip
Topics covered at the Trip Leader Orientation will include:
> Good leadership characteristics
> Trip leadership skills
> Teamwork / Group Dynamics / Conflict Resolution
> Safety & emergency preparedness
> Risk Assessment
> Time Management
> The “Mentored Trip” process
> Trip Scenario problem-solving discussions
