Wilderness First Aid - The Firs

Required first aid for Basic Mountaineering students. Taught by Wilderness Medical Associates, completion of this course will provide a 3-year certification in Wilderness First Aid.

When -

  • Saturday, February 8 and Sunday, February 9
  • 7:45 am - 6:00 pm both days

Where -

  • The Firs, Alpine Room -  4605 Cable St, Bellingham, WA
  • Directions: take Lakeway Dr toward Lake Whatcom, at Electric Ave stay right and Lakeway Dr becomes Cable St, come to the crest of a hill and cross Geneva St and then a crosswalk, turn left into a driveway in front of The Firs offices, drive past the registration office on the right and then the Alpine Room on the left, park in guest parking past the Alpine Room where the driveway turns to the right

To do before class -

  • Go to the Wilderness Medical Associates Moodle site and select "Create New Account" to set up your personal account
  • Then go to the enrollment link  https://courses.wildmed.com/course/view.php?id=3030 (this will look like the Moodle set up but is somehow a different link), and enter the login information for the account you just created

  • You will be directed to the page for Wilderness First Aid - Bellingham Mountaineers, enter "30119" into the enrollment key box and click "Enrol Me"
  • Complete the three "WMA Pre-Course Release Forms" listed on your WFA course page:
    • 1 - WMA Indemnity Form
    • 2 - WMA Consent for Photographs, Videotapes, and Film
    • 3 - WMA Student Protocol Disclaimer

Clothing -

  • Wear what you would wear to go on a day hike that day, dress in layers so that you will be comfortable both indoors and outdoors
  • You may bring extra dry/comfortable clothing for the classroom sessions inside if it is raining and your clothing may get wet during practice sessions outside

Gear -

  • Bring a pack of what you would carry on a day hike that day
  • If you have a closed cell foam sleeping/sitting pad, bring this as it will make activities sitting outside on the ground more comfortable
  • If you have hiking/ski poles, an ice axe, snow shoes, or other equipment like this that you might have with you, bring it to practice improvised splinting

Lunch -

  • Bring lunch and snacks to eat on site, there will not be time to leave for lunch
  • Bring a water bottle, extra water will be available - coffee will also be available in the classroom, so bring a coffee mug with a lid if you would like
