Group Size Norms

Group Size Norms

Here at The Mountaineers, we strive to respect and preserve outdoor areas as well as abide by policies of all land management agencies. These group size norms are based on our board policy on outdoor ethics.

  • All Mountaineers trips are to be scheduled in the activity database, which only allows one party per route. We do this to minimize our impact as a large organization.
  • Even one overlapping day will prevent you from scheduling on the website. If you have questions about this please contact member services.
  • If two Mountaineers parties encounter each other in the same area, trip leaders should select separate routes and campsites.
  • Group size should be limited to 12 or less. Some cross country zones (think North Cascades climbing destinations) or special permit areas like The Enchantments require  smaller party sizes. If you are unsure of the official group size limits please contact the land manager for the trail you are traveling on.
  • Exception: Course field trips and work parties may exceed a party size of 12, with permission   of the land manager if applicable.
  • Permits should be obtained as required. If you are a new course leader, please consult the previous course leader for information regarding the proper permits for your course area.
  • Need a route/place to have a higher capacity? Contact , our responsible recreation manager, with your request.
  • See a route/place that does not reflect the correct permitted limit? Send an email to info@mountaineers.org with the route/place link and what the true capacity should be.
