Barney Scout Mann | Journeys North: The Pacific Crest Trail

Barney Scout Mann | Journeys North: The Pacific Crest Trail

Drought, severe storms, shattered bones, illnesses, and helicopter rescues strengthen the hikers’ bond as they make their way northward.

Barney Mann, known as Scout on the trail, and his wife, Sandy, known as Frodo, set out on the 2650-mile trail in 2007, a year of extreme weather conditions in which only a third of PCT hikers finished. Along the way, their lives became intertwined with four of their fellow hikers: Blazer, Nadine, Tony, and Dalton.

A once-in-a-generation drought, severe winter storms, shattered bones, illnesses, and helicopter rescues strengthen the hikers’ bond as they make their way northward. Through their experiences on the trail, Mann reveals the universality of our humanity and what it means to belong.

Join The Mountaineers and Barney as he shares his compelling story of of six people as they hike from Mexico to Canada.

About Barney Scout Mann
Barney Scout Mann is one of the rare individuals who have hiked America’s Triple Crown of Trails: the Appalachian, Pacific Crest, and Continental Divide Trails. Backpacker magazine calls Mann a “master storyteller” and National Geographic dubbed him “arguably the dean of America’s long-distance trails.”

His connections to the PCT run deep, as each spring for the past fifteen years he and his wife Sandy have hosted hikers starting out on the PCT (more than 7,000 to date) at their San Diego home. Mann is president of the Partnership for the National Trails System and his writing has been featured in Backpacker, the Portland Oregonian, and the New York Times online.
