NW Peaks Brewery is looking to The Mountaineers for someone who could offer informative, interesting presentations on topics that will  inspire the community to get outside, enjoy the wilderness that surrounds Seattle, and to get involved in protecting our wild spaces. In 2008, the NBA and Howard Schultz broke Seattle's heart by picking up and moving to Oklahoma City (and then failing to win a championship that Seattle fans would have delivered). Local legends who lived in the area, and enjoyed the praise that no other city would lavish on them like Seattle can, stood awestruck that such a rich and proud tradition like Sonics basketball could be gone in an instant. Legends like Slick Watts, Gary Payton, and Shawn Kemp stuck around and lobbied for another NBA franchise, however, David Stern and the league resisted, telling every other team that needed a new arena, "those Seattle sharks are always willing to swoop in and steal your team if you don't make your taxpayers pony up for a new building."  As time went by, the Sonics faithful remained dedicated to the cause, but realized they needed to keep their minds and bodies fresh as the waiting dragged on. It may sound odd, but Reinhold Messner has been inside my head for more than two decades. His deeds, his remarkable introspection, and his sheer productivity set him in a class all his own. In addition to climbing the fourteen 8000-meter peaks, crossing Antarctica and the Gobi Desert on foot, and researching the roots of the Yeti, he has written some sixty books. I’m proud to note that Mountaineers Books has published translations of fourteen of those books, making us his publisher of record in North America.  Read more…
