West Fork Teanaway

This area offers multiple choices in difficulty and destination for snowshoeing, skiing, trail running, and bikepacking using old logging roads or simply choosing appropriate open terrain. On weekends, there may be moderate snow machine use, but there is so much area that conflicts are minimal. Once above the valley floor, the views to the Stuart Range open up.

Getting There

The trailhead is where the West Fork Teanaway Road is gated year-round. Take Exit 85 off of I-90. Turn left onto SR-10/SR-970 and then right to stay on SR-10/SR-970. Drive 6.5 miles and turn left onto Teanaway Road. Drive 7.3 miles, turn left onto West Fork Teanaway Road, and drive ~1 mile to the end of the paved road (2,500 ft). Park on the edge of the road adjacent to the turnaround. There is a vault toilet near the turnaround area.

In winter the West Fork Teanaway Road is plowed to a point just over a mile from the turnoff from the North Fork Teanaway Road. It should be easily accessible by all vehicles as long as West Fork Teanaway Road is plowed and there is plenty of parking on south side of the road.

On the Trail

There are foot trails through the forest, perhaps on remnants of roads, but the sense of "road" is obscure. This area is very good for naturalist trips—observing flowers, trees, shrubs, birds, and geology. There is very unique and interesting geology here—Cheese Rock, Bible Rock, Exclamation Point Rock, Mammoth Rock, etc. The geology in this area is accessible and easy to observe, while other sites with this type of geology in Washington state are more remote.
