Central Cowlitz Chimney

A moderate scramble on the eastern side of Mount Rainier National Park of 16 miles and 3,900 feet of elevation gain.

getting there

Drive SR 410 to the White River Entrance of Mount Rainier National Park. Cross Frying Pan Creek. Park on the west side of the creek at the trailhead.

approach & ascent

Follow the Summerland trail to Panhandle Gap. Go left on boot trail to the saddle and follow the ridge up the broad south slope of Banshee Peak. Traverse east at 7,000 ft. South Cowlitz Chimney and the ridge leading to the Central Cowlitz Chimney will come into view.

Continue to small bench below Central Cowlitz Chimney and proceed to a small saddle on the left (west) side. Ascend the summit block on benches, aiming for small patch of trees. There is lots of loose rock in this area, and it may appear impossible from the saddle, but it does go. Above the trees ascend good boulders to the summit.

  • Tread lightly on fragile tundra plants in the area.
  • Because of loose rock on summit block, we recommend taking a small party of experienced scramblers only.
  • This trip can be combined with Banshee Peak.
