Mormon Ladies Lakes

This trail system along Icicle Ridge accesses high meadows, tundra ridges and alpine lake basins for strenuous to very strenuous backpacks of 19 to 35 miles, reaching Frosty Pass, Lake Margaret, Lake Mary, Mary Pass, Florence Lake, Ladies Pass, Lake Edna, Lake Brigham, Lake Flora and Lake Augusta, with several entry points from the Icicle Creek road and Stevens Pass highway.

on the trail

Climb high on Icicle Ridge to immense views of the Chiwaukum Mountains, Mount Cashmere, Mount Stuart, Monte Cristo, Glacier Peak and Mount Rainier, starting from trailheads at the end of Icicle Creek Road (Forest Road 7600), at Chatter Creek Campground or Fourth of July Creek, or along Whitepine and Whitehorse Creeks from Highway 2.   Endless loops are possible, exiting past the Scottish Lakes, Chiwaukum Lake or multiple exit points along Icicle Creek road.

suggested itineraries

  • Starting at Icicle Creek road-end at 2,900 ft, follow the Icicle Creek Trail (No. 1551) 4.5 miles to the junction with the Frosty Creek Trail (No. 1592) at 3,300 ft.  Go right and climb 4 more miles to Frosty Pass with parklands stretching in every direction. Turn right and onto the very popular Icicle Ridge Trail (No. 1570). Pass Lake Margaret (8 mi, 5,400 ft), Lake Mary (10.5 mi, 6,100 ft), and cross Mary Pass (1.25 mi, 6,900 ft) to reach Upper Florence Lake (11.75 mi, 6,500 ft). Camps can be found at all of these lakes.  Cross Ladies Pass (12.5 mi, 6,800 ft).  Lakes Brigham and Flora lie in about 2 miles and and 1,500 feet below on Chiwaukum Creek Trail (No. 1571).   Continuing on the Icicle Ridge Trail  another mile from the Chiwaukum Creek Trail junction, round 7,315-foot Cape Horn and cold, rocky Lake Edna.  Shortly after Lake Edna, turn right on the Chatter Creek Trail (No. 1580), to exit via Chatter Creek Campground for a (partial) loop of 19.6 miles, 4,000 feet of elevation gain and 4,100 feet of elevation loss.  A car shuttle of approximately 5 miles one way is required for this trip.
  • Another attractive option is to start at the Whitepine trailhead and hike the Whitepine and Whitehorse trails to camp at Grace Lakes, then climb over Frosty and Mary Passes, visit Mary Lake and camp at Upper Florence Lake on day two.  On the third day, explore Ladies Pass and as many of the nearby lakes as time permits, including Alice, Edna and Flora Lakes, and then on the fourth day hike back to your car the way you came, a loop of 30 miles and 6,200 feet of elevation gain.

other options

  • Many shorter out and back options can be constructed to reach the lakes and passes along this route and avoid the car shuttle.
  • It is possible to extend your trip if you choose the first itinerary above by continuing straight from Lake Edna on the Icicle Ridge trail past Lake Augusta (19.5 miles and 6,000 feet of elevation gain from the Icicle Creek road-end) and above the headwaters of Cabin Creek before climbing to the high point above Fourth of July Creek (28.4 miles and nearly 8,700 feet of elevation gain from the Icicle Creek road-end) before descending on the Fourth of July Creek Trail to Icicle Creek Road.  A car shuttle of approximately 15 miles one-way is required for this trip.
  • For even longer adventures, this trail system can also be connected to trails from Stevens Pass into the Scottish Lakes or Chain and Doelle Lakes.
