Leavenworth

A rock climber's playground and training facility! Enjoy crag climbing along Icicle Creek and in Tumwater Canyon, both just outside of Leavenworth on Highway 2.

** 4/22/18 - PLEASE DO NOT USE ROTO WALL OR BRUCE'S BOULDER UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE **

Both Bruce's Boulder and Roto Wall are located on private property, and the property owner has requested that organized groups do not use the property. Since we do not have permission from the property owner to use these areas for our courses or activities, we must not use it for anything Mountaineers-related.

** 6/1/2021 - Mountaineers Dome Parking **

Mountaineers Dome is located on Forest Service property, and climbing access is legal. However, there is a conflict about the parking area. In fall 2019, a nearby landowner began posting "No Parking" signs and placing pamphlets on parked vehicles stating that vehicles would be towed. The Mountaineers and our partners at Leavenworth Mountain Association (LMA), Washington Climbers Coalition, and Access Fund have looked into the situation, and according to Chelan County, the parking area for Mountaineers Dome is on a county right of way and is a legal parking area. The landowner has legitimate complaints, such as members of the public trespassing through their private property down to the river and leaving litter. The Mountaineers and LMA encourage climbers to be respectful and avoid confrontation with all landowners in the Icicle, including this one. If you experience any confrontation or threats from the landowner, please call the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office at 509-667-6851.

Information for leaders

scheduling & permits

  • All our fee-based course field trips and seminars on U.S. Forest Service Land must be scheduled through the lottery process for User Days as allocated as part of our use permit. Review our past User Day Allocations. Leaders should be prepared to show our permit to any rangers who ask. Leaders should also read and become familiar with the district's Outfitter's Pocket Guide
  • Mountaineers activities on U.S. Forest Service land near Leavenworth must meet the Forest Service group size standards. Rock climbing groups in the Icicle Canyon or Castle Rock should not exceed 15 (students and instructors) at any one crag. Please limit total group size on private land to 15 as well.
  • Leaders, please identify the climbing area you plan to use for your trip by choosing an alternate title title to ensure we don't have more than one group at the same area at the same time. Please let us know if we need to add any alternate titles by using our Route/Place Updates, Images & Resources Form.
  • Please use the Sam Hill (Leavenworth) route/place if you plan to conduct your activity there.
