Ketron Island Circumnavigation

Sea kayak around the privately-owned island in south Puget Sound near Steilacoom and the Nisqually Delta.

launch points

  • Sunnyside Beach in Steilacoom.  This launch has a long carry from the parking area to the launch site. It's a 7.5 nm trip.
  • Salters Point Park in Steilacoom. This launch has very limited parking and a steep stairway to the beach. It's  a 7 nm trip.
  • Steilacoom, Ketron & Anderson Island Ferry. Lauch at the dock immediately north of the ferry landing.  This launch site has abundant parking (pay lot), easy beach access, and clean restrooms at the ferry office. It's a 6.5 nm trip.
  • Luhr's Landing (aka Luhr Beach) in the Nisqually Delta. It's a 12.5 nm trip.

on the water

Because Ketron Island is privately owned, there are no landing sites on the island.  Possible lunch or break stops can be found at spots along the main shoreline. Solo Point provides a great lunch stop and Cole Point works well for a break on the leg south. The current through Cormorant Passage experiences an ebb but minimal to weak flood, and a tidal race can exist south of Lyle Point on Anderson Island in a flood.
