Banshee Peak

A 14 mile, 3600 foot scramble to a broad peak above Panhandle Gap. Excellent views of Mount Rainier, the Emmons Glacier and Cowlitz Chimneys.

getting there

Drive  SR 410 to White River Entrance to Mount Rainier National Park. On the White River Road at 3 miles past the park entrance and just beyond  the Fryingpan Creek Bridge, find the trail to Summerland, part of the Wonderland Trail, (3,800 ft).

APPROACH & Ascent

Follow Wonderland Trail to the meadow at Summerland (5,900 ft) and continue on to Panhandle Gap at (6,720 ft). Contour easterly, following a broad ridge up to highest point on Banshee Peak (7,404 ft). It's 14 miles round trip with 3,600 feet of elevation gain.

NOTES

  • Snow at Panhandle Gap may be icy and require crampons.
  • This area has beautiful heather and alpine vegetation so tread lightly and if possible stick to rocks and snow.
