5:45 AM at Houghton P&R

Winter scrambles are open only to GRADUATES of the Scramble or Basic Climbing class. Students of either one must wait until next year to participate.

MEETING PLACE: Meet on the north side of the Houghton Park & Ride (just off exit 17 on I-405) at 5:45 a.m.

- Ice ax.
- Snowshoes with aggressive points on the bottom such as MSR.
- Avalanche beacon, shovel, probe and the skills to use them are highly recommended. Please bring them if you have them!
- No parking pass is required.

ROUTE: We will park at wide pullout on Hwy 2 west, just east of Smith Brook Road (FS 6700). We’ll hike approx. 3 miles up the road to the second hairpin (4000’), then head cross country towards Union Gap. From the flat area below Union Gap (4480’) we’ll head NNE to Union’s SE ridge, then onto the summit (5696’). If the conditions and party strength are good, we’ll continue north to the summit of Jove (6007’).
Total RT stats: ~9.75 miles, 4000’ elevation gain/loss.

HIGH AVY DANGER ALTERNATIVE: In the event of high avy danger I will change the destination to one with more suitable terrain.
