Old Baldy Mountain

Winter Scramble - Old Baldy Mountain

[Trip contingent of weather and avy condition] For the Rainier 100 folks, might include some additional road walking, if snow covers the road. (alternate destination would be Arthur peak)

COVID-19: Learn about our most up-to-date guidance for participants and leaders on our COVID-19 Response page. All participants and leaders must agree to the COVID-19 Code of Conduct before participating in this Mountaineers activity.
  • Technical 3, Strenuous 3
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 7.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 3,000 ft
  • Pace: 1.5 mph + 1000 feet an hour (uphill) ; 2-2.5mph and 2000 feet an hour (downhill)

We will meet at the junction of Fairfax Forest Reserve Road and Cayada Creek road at 7.15AM

** Please read leader notes for contingency trip plan before signing up**

Plan A : To drive as much as possible on the Cayada creek road (which is a terrible road even for a 4X4). From there we will hike, bushwhack and snowshoe up to the summit.

Do not let the mileage and elevation fool you about the amount of energy needed for the trip.

Plan B: If the road is snowed in, to a point where more than 3 miles of round trip is added, we will turn around and park at the end of the Carbon river road and scramble Arthur Peak.

Arthur Peak will require similar gear, but additional 1000 feet of elevation gain, making it 13.6 miles round trip and 3,500 feet gain

As always on my trip, please come prepared to help with navigation (First ascent on this mountain for the leader)*
