  • Winter Scramble
  • Mileage: 9.5 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 3,750 ft
7:00 AM at Enumclaw Safeway
This is a substitute for Crystal Peak, since the trail head for Crystal Pk is not currently accessible. Rt 410 is closed at Crystal Mtn Blvd. Mutton Mtn is mostly a trail hike in summer. It is not technically difficult in winter but does have over 3500 ft of elevation gain, first in woods, then on an open ridge with excellent views of Mt Rainier. Equipment: the usual ice ax and snowshoes, microspikes or equivalent recommended. As always, actual route and destination subject to weather and avalanche conditions. No Scramble or Basic climb students.
