Winter Scramble - Mount St. Helens/Worm Flows

Let's say goodbye to 2023 the right way, on a mountain! Winter overnight scramble; ideally we will go Sat-Sun, but if the weather/avy risk is better Fri-Sat, we will change it to Dec. 29 - 30. Bad weather/avy risk will cancel the trip - there may or may not be a backup plan. Priority until Dec. 10 for Kitsap and Olympia scramblers.

  • Strenuous 5, Technical 4, Winter Scramble
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 12.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 5,700 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 8,250 ft
  • Pace: 1000ft/hr

Saturday, Dec. 30, 10am TH, or we can arrange carpools from Olympia.

Tentative itinerary will be:

Dec. 30 -

Meet at TH 10am. Divide group gear and head up at 10:30. Arrive at camp about 500ft above Chocolate Falls by 1:30pm.
Set up camp, sunset hike, dinner, early to bed.

Dec. 31 -

TBD. If it's nice snow, we'll want to go early. If it's icy, we'll start after sunrise. Summit is not guaranteed, due to potential icy or avalanche conditions up high, but we'll go for it and see. We'll try to get back to Olympia and Kitsap Peninsula in time for people to join their New Year's festivities, but again, no guarantees. Optional dinner after the climb, most likely in Olympia.

When you request permission, please let us know about your winter camping experience and gear. We may be able to lend some types of gear - tents, crampons, sleeping bags, but can't really help with clothing, shoes and personal survival items.
