Winter Scramble - Mount St. Helens/Worm Flows

The Mt St Helens/Worm Flow route is a 12 mile 5,700 foot elevation gain winter scramble. Maximum elevation is 8,363 ft. Climbers should be prepared for a strenuous climb and be well conditioned. A climbing permit and Sno Park permit are needed. The leader has five permits each for $22. Preference will be given to Olympia scramble students (basic climbing students have a class that evening, sorry!)

  • Strenuous 5, Technical 4, Winter Scramble
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 12.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 5,700 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 8,363 ft
  • Pace: estimate 1 mph ascending, 2 mph descending

We will meet at the Marble Mountain Sno-Park at 4 am May 28 geared up and ready to go, sign in, and start moving.   (There is a possibility the Climbers Bivouac will be clear by May 28 and we could switch to  meeting there, and if so, this change will be announced at least two days in advance.)

From the town of Cougar, drive east on Lewis River Road which turns into Forest Road 90.  Continue on FR 90  to FR 83.  Turn left on FR 83 and continue approximately 6 miles to the Marble Mountain Sno-Park.   There are two parking lots, the first on the right and the second on the left.   The sign in area is in the parking lot on the left near the toilets and shelter.

This is a serious winter scramble requiring winter travel awareness, skills, and preparedness.   We will also most likely do some glissading coming down.   Preference will be given for Olympia scramble students (basic climbing students have a class that evening, sorry!) or for scramble and basic climbing graduates.   Registration has to be complete two days before the climb and names submitted for the permits.  I will not be able to replace a climber if they drop after that so  I am setting 4 days before as a deadline for registering and paying the $22 fee for the permit.   Sno-park permits are not required at this time of year.  If we switch to Climbers Bivouac, a Discover Pass or national parks pass will be required, either one works.
