Winter Scramble - Mount Adams/South Spur

Priority for Kitsap Scramble and Climbing Courses. DO NOT request permission before then if you're not in one of those groups! DO NOT sign up without leader permission; you will be removed from the roster and denied permission. When requesting, please let us know what 4,000+ft days you've done this year.

  • Strenuous 5, Technical 4
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 14.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 6,600 ft
  • Pace: 1,000 ft/hr

Saturday - We'll take the morning and part of the afternoon to do 4,000ft to Lunch Counter at 9400ft (we usually camp at the base of the summit route). Once we set up camp, we'll get water from the waterfall on the east side of Lunch Counter and enjoy our evening. Nothing beats the sunset up there on a beautiful night!

Sunday - We like to climb Mount Adams "the lazy way," leaving around 7:30am when the snow is less apt to be icy, but still crampon-firm. We'll take 3-4hrs to summit. Hopefully the glissade chute will be soft enough by noon for a smooth ride down. Break camp, maybe get to glissade a  little below Lunch Counter and hoof out. Please do not make plans for the evening, just in case something unexpected occurs.

Cold Springs campground (TH), 10pm Friday evening, Saturday 7:30am TH. Carpooling encouraged. Camping at TH recommended, as it's at 5400ft and an overnight will help with acclimatization. Snow on road may require parking down road and walk up to TH.
