Winter Scramble - Mailbox Peak

Late Sunday morning, moderate-paced Mailbox Peak up the old, down the new for those of you training this spring. Kitsap branch has first priority until March 15. Leader's permission required.

  • Very Strenuous, Snow Scramble, Winter Scramble
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 11.2 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 4,100 ft
  • Pace: 1000ft/hr

Sheesh, I hope it's not a winter scramble by March 30, but in an El Nino year, you never know... So, we'll plan to bring ice axes, helmets, crampons and maybe even snowshoes.

Meet at North Bend Safeway at (east side of the lot) at 9:35 or TH at 10am. This is advertised at a reasonable pace; please let us know if you have any questions.

Mailbox is a pretty straightforward steep, rocky, rooty hike up 3000ft in under 2mi to a jct, and then up a mountain face - when there's snow, or as a traverse across and then up when it's bare. Coming down, we'll take the "new" trail (which is several years old now, but still). It's easier on the knees, but it's loooong. Some people hate it, but it does build mental fortitude for those expanding trails out from climbs that seem to go on forever.

With the late morning start, we'll plan to be out by sunset, which will be 7:35ish, with last light at 8:10. We'll bring headlamps nonetheless.

Avalanche danger, .25"+ rain forecasted, heavy snow or arctic temps will cancel the activity, but let's hope for sunshine.

10am, TH. This trailhead gets very busy, so we suggest carpooling from the North Bend Safeway, meeting at 9:30-ish.
