  • Winter Scramble
  • Mileage: 10.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 4,300 ft
7:00 AM at Cayuse Campground on Salmon la Sac Rd
Changed destination from Mt. Wow to Jolly Mtn because of avalanche conditions on Mt. Rainier. Jolly Mtn is 12.5 miles and 4,700ft elevation with potential for views of the Teanaways including the Mt. Stuart range. Plan on arriving at the Cayuse Campground up the Salmon La Sac road by 7AM with a plan to be walking shortly after 7:30am. Google maps indicates about 110 miles and 2 hrs & 15 minutes drive time from the 65th P&R; so those interested in carpooling should plan on meeting at 4:45AM. We’ll be parking at the Cayuse Campground ungroomed sno-park and a sno-park permit is required (easy to purchase online). For those unfamiliar with the TH, Take Exit 80 off of I-90 and head north on Bullfrog Road. You will hit two traffic circle on the way to Roslyn. In both traffic circles focus on heading directly to Roslyn (not Suncadia Resort or Cle Elum). Once in Roslyn go through the town on Route 903 (Salmon La Sac Road) and stay on it for approximately eleven miles. You will go well past Cle Elum Lake and will then be driving near Salmon la Sac River. Stay on the Salmon la Sac Road until the turnoff for the Cayuse Campground. There will be a parking area on the side of the road. Given winter scramble conditions, please bring: • ice axe • mountaineering snow shoes with aggressive teeth • crampons (just in case it’s icy in sections) • helmet • one shovel & probe per four people (avalanche beacons are not needed) • 10 essentials for winter travel (plenty of layers). • There’s a chance we’ll be walking out on the road in near darkness, so make certain you have a functioning headlamp with fresh batteries and spares. Group gear we’ll distribute at the TH includes: • Rope • Stove • Shovels / probes • Sleeping bag, bivvy, and insulation layer (I’ll carry these) We will start at the Jolly Mtn Trail Head at approximately 2,400 ft elevation on the Davis Peak USGS quad. We’ll ascend along this trail moving up through forested slopes until we gain a ridgeline to Jolly Mtn (6,440 ft elevation). That’s it for now. Please call or email with questions.
