Due to the extraordinary amount of snow we have been getting the last week and have forecasted for the next several days, I have changed the destination for this trip from Silver Peak to West Granite on the other side of the freeway. Silver Peak has too much steep terrain for the deep powder snow we are going to find. West Granite Mountain, sometimes referred to as Tusk’O Granite is point 5566’ north west of the main Granite Mountain summit which most of you have probably hiked to several times.

We will park at the Pratt Lake / Granite Mtn trail head (exit 47) and take the trail up to the clearing north of Olallie Lake. This trail will have gotten lots of snowshoe traffic lately and should be easy to follow. From north of the lake we will climb up to the ridge and then ascend it to the summit. From the summit we will descend directly back to the lake staying in the safety of the dense trees The distance will be about 8 miles and 3500’. Plan for a challenging day.

Trail Pass.
Ice Axe - Required. We may need this on the ridge.
Snowshoes – Required. Must be ones with big claws on the bottom such as MSR.
Avalanche Beacon: – Highly recommended, but not required.
Avalanche Shovel – Highly recommended, but not required.
Avalanche Probe – Highly recommended, but not required
Crampons – Leave them at home for this trip.
