6:30 AM at South Renton Park and Ride
Note that winter scrambles are open only to GRADUATES of the Scramble or Basic Climbing class. Students of either one must wait until next year to participate.

This will be a winter scramble of south east ridges surrounding the Crystal Mountain Ski Area. If you have been with me on a traverse trip to Norse Peak that ends at the ski area, this will be the continuation to the south. I picked this weekend because there should be enough snow, but there still won’t be many skiers yet on the slopes across from us hooting and hollering.

6:30 AM at the south end of the South Renton Park and Ride. Call me on my cell phone at 425-442-6411 if you are running late and want us to wait for you.

- Ice Axe is absolutely required.
- Snowshoes with aggressive points on the bottom such as MSR.
- Crampons are absolutely required. The ridges could very likely be icy.
- Avalanche beacon, shovel, probe and the skills to use them are highly recommended but not required for participation.
- No parking pass is required at the ski area

The plan is to start at the ski lodge, hike east up to Bullion Basin and the saddle at 6000’. From there we head south over 6479, Crown Point, 6361, (Pickhandle Point), Bear Gap, 6400 +/-, around the north side of point 6796 (Three Way Peak - too steep to go over), over 6719, 6988 (Silver King), 6861 (The Throne) and then down to the lodge which is where the topo map shows two lifts come together (but that map is out of date).
Obviously on a trip like this, conditions will dictate how far we get. If we give up early, we will bail out and drop into the ski area basin for an easy hike back to the base lodge. But if we make it all the way around to the lodge at the top of the Forest Queen ski lift, beer is on me!!

Here is a link to a printable map of the area:,-121.484177&t;=t4&z;=15&hillshade;=18&coord;=latlng&directions;=off&mylocation;=off&label;=off&layers;=off&screen;=auto&streetview;=on

I would encourage you to review and print this map. If you can't get the 'Mapping Support' print feature to work, Press Ctrl-PrntScr to copy the screen Image to the clipboard, paste it into the Microsoft Paint program, crop it to size, and print it out. Please don't show up without map compass and the skills to use them

Here is a link to a big PDF file from the ski area that shows part of the route. In the sketch we will come up from the lodge toward the lower left corner, and then traverse along the left side to Three-Way, Silver King and The Throne. The “free beer” lodge is at the top of the Forest Queen lift.
