Saturday: Wynoochee Gorge - the main event
- Parking for the put in is a pull out by a gated logging road on Wynoochee Valley Road at 47.3411,-123.6313. This makes for a 0.9 miles downhill hike to the put in.
- We will need to suss out the best take out on Friday night or Saturday morning. One option is Save Creek and park at 47.2986,-123.6272. This may be too brushy to hike up the creek. The river bank may be too steep to get to the logging road. Another option is downstream at 47.2764,-123.6505 and park at 47.2785, -123.6289. Both have logging roads to hike up. Both involve about 180 feet of gain over about one mile.
-
Just after the large oxbow we will portage Landslide Rapid (IV+) at 47.3289, -123.6482. Left is a harder eddy to make and an exposed scramble but much easier walk and re-entry. Right side is easier to catch the eddy, scrambling at water's edge, and put into whitewater.
-
Train Rapid we will try to scout. Most take the line right of center. There could be metal protrusions just below the surface. The right side has a safer channel and avoids the bulk of the train car.
SUNDAY: TBD ONE OF THESE OPTIONS
- NF Quinault is a beautiful III run. We could do a hike-to from NF Campground and leave vehicles at camp so it wouldn't require a shuttle. Last year we put in at Halfway House. We could hike up to the next put in at Elip Creek Campground.
- Salmon River is 9 miles, and has 40 fpm. There is not much beta. It is rated II(IV). Starts with a short gorge then flattens out. It is not clear if the IV rapid can be portaged or scouted.
- Queets is not too far away. A lazy but beautiful class II float. We could open the trip up to class II boaters.
- Dosewallips may be convenient and be worth repeating. There is a gorge and it could be suitable for class II boaters looking for an introduction to class III.
