Sauk River: Darrington to Skagit River

Trip

Whitewater Packraft - Sauk River: Darrington to Lower Sauk Boat Launch

Class II or maybe II+ run from Backman County Park (above Darrington) to the Lower Sauk boat launch. A glacial river with lots of gravel bars.

  • Class II River
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 10.5 mi

The Mountaineers route/place page describes starting in Darrington, but this trip will start 3 miles upstream at the Backman County Park, which should provide some good class II drops. The put-in is right at a boulder garden that's maybe II+ (I've done this before but only once and years ago so I don't remember it very well). Downriver of Darrington, there will be some class II rapids but it will generally be flatter.

The Sauk is a river with some wood hazard. There will be wood on the shores and there is the potential for wood blockages where it gets braided. We will have to paddle cautiously and responsibly. It appears there's a permanent wood feature immediately upstream of Darrington, but the portage appears straightforward.

Because of the potential for wood, newer packrafters are welcome to join but you must have solid boat control skills and the ability to pull over on a gravel bar on short notice if need be.

10.5 miles is kind of a long day on the river, so depending on flows we may have to do some downriver paddling to make good time. We won't be in a hurry, but we won't just be floating either.

If the weather's good, there should be some very scenic views of Whitehorse and other peaks.

As with all river trips, this trip is contingent upon the river flow running at a reasonably safe and fun level, and the destination will be finalized (or the trip cancelled if need be) as the trip date approaches. The route may be changed to another one of a similar class or difficulty depending on conditions.

Meet at 9 AM in Darrington at the parking lot between the IGA and Moe's: https://maps.app.goo.gl/SJn47jEATxsQturG8

Once we're all there, we'll drive to leave shuttle vehicles at the take-out at the Lower Sauk Boat Launch, just below the confluence with the Suiattle: https://maps.app.goo.gl/yD4S6oVndbDc7LAU6

Then drive to the put-in at Backman County Park: https://maps.app.goo.gl/3qWY8qPCUg9MYWkx7
