Walk from a relocated park in the Kent Valley along a new section of river trail to get to a sidewalk that will take us up the Kent West Hill to Grandview. Here will will get an amazing panorama over the East Hill, Issaquah Alps and Mt. Rainier. On the way back we will visit an earthworks park. All within a 5 mile loop and elevation gain of just over 300ft.
9:30am Van Doren's Landing Park, Russell Road, Kent.
Full directions will be emailed to participants once registration closes on Sept 21.
Our route will start at the recently relocated Van Doren’s Landing Park in Kent where there are restrooms. After a short tour of some of the new park trails we would follow a new section of the Green River Trail south to the Veterans Drive bridge over the Green River. From here we would walk west up the sidewalk of Veterans Drive to the Grandview Apartments, climb a short flight of steps and tour the Grandview Off-Leash Dogpark trails* for amazing views on a fine clear day over the Kent Valley and East Hill to the Issaquah Alps, including through the gap between Cougar and Sqauk Mountains a glimpse of Mt. Index and Glacier Peak. Also a great unobstructed view of Mt. Rainier to the southeast.
*Please note: This walk will involved traveling through Grandview Park: an expansive off-leash dog park.Having taken this trail many times I have concluded that dogs off leash with their owners offer virtually no danger to other walkers. (Strangely I find dogs are almost always better behaved with people and other dogs off rather than on leash). Please do not register if you are unhappy to take this part of the walk.
From Grandview Park we will next descend north on the sidewalk beside Riverview Blvd. S passing through little Riverview Park and along 40th Ave S. to reach the Robert Morris Earthworks Park where the earthworks have been fashioned from the side of a hill. The route will then take us east alongside 40th Place S.to return to Riverview Blvd S. Here we would walk through "The Parks” community to reach Frager Road. A short distance south along this traffic-free section of road we will cross back over the Green River by a footbridge and return to Van Doren’s Landing Park.
The mileage for this loop walk just under 5 miles with a total elevation gain of 330ft. We will stop several times for a break.
There is a place on this trip available for a person interested in becoming an urban walk leader to gain experience as an Assistant Leader. No experience of the route is needed. Please contact Chris Ensor if interested.
