Meet geared up and ready to walk at 6:45 am in the Whitman MS parking area, 9201 15th Ave NW, cnr NW 95th St.
This pilot, half-day, On-Trail Navigation Field Trip is for prospective and current Seattle leaders of Urban Walks and Hikes. This is Module 3 of the course under development. Participants should (ideally) complete Module 1 (videos, reading, auto-scored quiz) and Module 2 (May 24 evening seminar creating Hike and Urban Walk digital maps plus map/compass work).
The field trip has two, linked sections:
>>Student/instructors navigate urban streets to and from the Carkeek trailhead starting at Whitman MS -- about 2 miles RT.
>>Student/instructors navigate a loop route into and through Carkeek Park working a dozen on-trail navigation scenarios to become fluent with tool use (map, altimeter, compass, gps and watch plus emergency communication devices)
Required Equipment
Water, snacks, appropriate outerwear, and trail shoes with good tread.
Mount Si NRCA Green Trails 206S map (2021)
Paper, student generated Gaia area map (black and white Or color)
Altimeter (most will use the function in Gaia)
Declination adjustable baseplate compass (mirror optional)
SmartPhone loaded with area map and other gpx files (provided)
Instructor Scenario Notes (will provide waterproof copy to all)
