Top Rope Rock Climb - Exit 38/Far Side Crags

A practice evening primarily for current-year Basic Alpine Climbing or Intro to Alpine Rock students to practice skills on rock, such as following a multi-pitch, belaying, rappeling, gear management, etc.

This is a practice session on real rock primarily for current year Basic Alpine Climbing or Intro to Alpine Rock students. If spots are unfilled after the priority registration date, others can join, such as graduates of those courses or other qualified climbing participants.

We will climb a couple of routes at the Sunshine Vista Slab, one of which is a 2 pitch climb that can give students the opportunity to practice following multi-pitch sequences including belaying a leader. Other skills to practice are general belaying, rappelling, gear management, communications, and keeping yourself safe. These are sport routes(quick-draws only in this case). Participants will not be leading.

Students: Make sure you bring:

  • The Ten Essentials
  • Harness
  • Helmet
  • Rockshoes
  • Belay Device
  • Autoblock
  • Personal Anchor
  • Some slings and carabiners
  • Water and snacks 
  • Backpack to carry all of the above

Leaders also please bring:

  • Ropes (3 x 60 meters)
  • Alpine draws (e.g. 10 sewn runners with 20 wiregate carabiners)
  • Self-braking belay device like Black Diamond ATC Guide or Petzl Reverso
  • Anchor material for bolted anchors.

3:30 pm at Farside parking area (Off Exit 38, I-90) ready to go. Discover Pass required. A detailed email with be sent to registered participants at least two days before the climb.
