7:00 AM at Martin Way P/R
DATE Saturday, September 14th. The work day will be between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. LOCATION The Mine Trail is located a 1.5 mile hike from the Carbon River Entrance, or depending on number of vehicles, a carpool or shuttle may be arranged. At this point, please plan for either option. PROJECT This Sept. 14th trail restoration project has been created by the Mt. Rainier National Park staff strictly for the Mountaineers, so let’s give them a big hand and show them how much we appreciate their work and the Park. All you need to bring is a pair of work gloves, eye protection (goggles or sunglasses), long sleeved shirt and long pants, boots, water for the whole day and lunch. The Park staff will provide all of the tools. The Mine Trail project involves leveling of the tread to create a smoother, safer walking surface more resistant to erosion. The main project will be moving and applying gravel to fill in a turnpike, located close to the trailhead. This will involve buckets, wheel barrows, or sandbags to transport the material, and shovels or rakes to spread and level it. This trail used to be a lower priority, but now that the Carbon River Hike and Bike trail is inaccessible to vehicles, its priority is much higher. Let’s meet at the Martin Way P & R at 7:00 a.m. to carpool to Carbon River Entrance, or be at the Carbon River Entrance at 9:00 a.m. You can camp the night before or after for free at Ipsut Campground (5 mile easy hike or bike ride from the entrance, or the ranger could possibly drop you off 1.5 miles up the road). This is a backcountry campground, is closed to open fires and is leave-no-trace. There are pit toilets. It is a 3.5 mile hike to the Carbon Glacier from there. Please Contact: Bonnie Betts at bonbetts@gmail.com to sign up. Please let her know if you will or will not be camping at Ipsut Campground.
