This is considered a strenuous overnight trip. We will be working in the Boulder River Wilderness.

To ensure that we have a compatible group (fitness, comfort group pace, etc.) and are able to successfully and safely complete the trip, leader's permission is required.  Please send your request once registration opens.  In your request, please:

(1) Confirm that you've read the distance and elevation minimums in this post

(2) Confirm that you're comfortable with terrain as described

(3) Detail the trips you've taken *in the last 12 months* that have prepared you for this backpack.  For each trip, please provide:

  • your average distance/gain per day
  • the maximum distance/gain you had in a single day
  • the # days you were in the backcountry.

The route requires up to 8 miles of travel to get to the work/camp site over steep, rooty, muddy, and potentially light snowpack. Bikes are preferred but not required for this trip to travel the 2.5-mile gravel road portion.

Project logs will be selected based on the crew size and abilities. Expect this trip to be an introduction to crosscut saw logout. Safety will be priority one.

We will be camping for the night, experience with a backpacking or winter travel evidenced by a badge required. Melting snow may be our only water source at camp.

The lookout is an additional 8 miles and 4500ft one way from the job site and unlikely that we would be able to get close during the early season.

We expect that our tools will be carried and cached part-way up the mountain the prior weekend.

An email will be sent the evening before with weather conditions, gear checklist with sharing options, driving instructions, meetup details, and any other last-minute information that would be helpful to know.

Please review the requirements list in advance.

We will meet at 7:00 am in the Granite Falls McDonalds parking area while we still have cell service and determine carpooling and have a tailgate safety review of activity. Additional Carpool parking options include the Verlot Ranger station and along the Mountain Loop highway at the Old Robe trailhead. We can communicate other carpool options before the trip if you need.

The road was recently rebuilt to Canyon Creek MP 8.5 which is our expected trailhead depending on any damage from winter storms and melt.
