Stewardship - Church Creek–Satsop Lakes

The Church Creek Trail needs some attention as our winter and spring weather has brought a number of trees down on the trail and produced remarkable growth in plants bordering the trail.

Meet at 7:30 a.m. at the Mud Bay Park and Ride off State Route 101 west of Olympia.  Exit at Mud Bay - 2nd Avenue turn right off the exit ramp and then left in 40 yards onto Madrona Beach Dr. Follow 1/4 mile to Park and Ride on right.

The Trail Plan -  We will head to the Western (Wynoochee) trail head of Church Creek to continue cutting out logs and brushing back the healthy vegetation that blocks easy passage. The trail project will likely cover a mile or more of trail which includes an elevation gain of up to 1,300. We will be working and moving slowly up the trail resting regularly and whenever you choose.  This is an important trip - well, kind of. The trail is getting a lot more use now that WTA showcased it in their recent magazine edition and it would be smart to leave a good impression on those who venture out to the trail.

Meeting Time and Place

We meet at the Mud Bay Park and Ride at 7:30 a.m. to load up and carpool to the Wynoochee trailhead.  (NOTE: for a few folks this has been a bit of a loony place to find, but by now, I believe almost everyone has been there)  The Mud Bay Park and Ride is off State Route 101 west of Olympia.  Exit at Mud Bay - 2nd Avenue - Madrona Beach Dr  turn right off the exit ramp and then left in 40 yards onto Madrona Beach Dr.  Follow 1/4 mile to Park and Ride on right.

We will head west on State Route 101 and shortly move to State Route 8 heading west.  After about 50 minutes we will get off the State Route 8 in Montesano - the first exit as you are traveling west from Olympia.  As we get off the freeway there is a gas station directly ahead. We use this for a rest break before heading up the Wynoochee Valley Road to Lake Wynoochee.  We will meet another participant there.

We will then head up the Wynoochee Valley Road to Lake Wynoochee, about a 55 minute trip, where we could have another (last available) rest break at the dam.  From the dam to the trailhead is 98% gravel road and about a 25 minute trip.

Drivers with a high clearance vehicle are needed – Passenger plan on contributing $17.00 gas money
