Sea Kayaking Student Paddle - Budd Inlet

This experience paddle is geared toward individuals who recently took the Olympia Basic Sea Kayaking course. We will be launching from Swantown Marina on Budd Inlet, and equipment will be available for students.

  • Sea Kayak II
  • Easy
  • Mileage: 8.0 nm
  • Maximum Wind: 10 kts
  • Maximum Waves: 1 ft
  • Pace: 2.5 to 3 mph

All students will need to perform both self and assisted rescues at some point during this paddle, so be sure to come equipped with appropriate cold-water gear consisting of either a dry suit or a 3 mm thick Farmer Johns.

Email leader, Tom Culhane with any questions. Last minute inquiries may not get a response.

We will launch at Swantown Marina Boat Ramp, off of Marine View Drive in Olympia. For individuals bringing their own kayaks, these can be dropped off at the ramp prior to parking in the large lot above the boat ramp to the north.

Participants need to arrive early enough to be ready for a pre-paddle meeting at 9:45, and a 10 AM launch. Individuals who need to borrow kayaks should plan on arriving early (around 9:00) to make sure there is enough time before the launch to get boats and gear staged and packed.

Kayaks launching from the ramp do not need to pay a fee, however, this is an active boat launch, so it's important to stay out of the way of vehicles launching boat. Therefore, we will place our kayaks on the grassy area to the left of the boat ramp until just prior to launching.
