Sea Kayak - Washington Park to Friday Harbor

This is a classic and challenging trip in the southern San Juan Islands; 22nm from Washington Park to Friday Harbor with a free ride back on the ferry. Big currents; lumpy water.

  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 22.0 nm
  • Maximum Wind: 15 kts
  • Maximum Waves: 4 ft
  • Maximum Currents: 5.9 kts

After launching we'll cross Rosario Strait, letting a 4kt ebb sweep us to the southern end of Lopez Island. We'll then explore the incredibly beautiful rocky southern shore of Lopez Island, stopping at Iceberg Point for lunch. After lunch, we'll look for standing waves at Long Island, then paddle to Davis Point at the entrance to Cattle Pass and play in the standing waves that often form there. From there we'll paddle through very turbulent water flooding through Cattle Pass in excess of 5kt, playing in the boils and whirlpools as the current sweeps us north toward Friday Harbor. Expected arrival at Friday Harbor is around 4:30pm. We can have dinner while awaiting the 6:30pm ferry back to Anacortes.

This is a long and challenging paddle. You must be experienced and comfortable in strong currents and rough water, and in good physical shape as this is a long trip (22nm). We’ll be paddling at a 3kt pace and playing in the standing waves at Davis Point.

What to bring: Helmets, tow belts, VHF radios and wheels that fit into your boat. You’ll need to pack the wheels into your boat as we’ll wheel our boats on/off the ferry.

Meet at Washington Park next to the boat ramp at 7:00 AM.
(6320 Sunset Beach, Anacortes). There is a bathroom. After unloading we’ll move cars to the day use parking area.
