  • Sea Kayak IV
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 23.0 nm

Meet at 8:30am at the Washington Park Boat Launch. We will shuttle one or two cars to the ferry terminal and use to pick up other cars. We launch at 9:30am sharp.

I expect this sea kayak trip to have this difficulty and plan to paddle in up to these conditions (view the sea kayak difficulties definitions on our Activity Types, Difficulties & Prerequisites page):

  • Difficulty:  Strenuous
  • Wind: < 15 kt
  • Waves: < 3 ft
  • Currents: < 5 kt
  • Distance:  23 nm
  • Pace: Brisk, with current assist

This 22 mile trip is for experienced kayakers who have a good roll and can paddle at a brisk pace for an extended period of time.   There will  be opportunity for playtime in Cattle Pass; we'll hang out and surf standing waves at Davis Point then progress east of Deadman's Island.   We will ride the flood into Friday Harbor and return by ferry, endeavoring to make the 6:30pm departure.   Helmet, drysuits, and wheels are required.   Leader permission is required for signing up.

Wheels will need to fit in your boat and off the deck.

 - Experience in rip tides, rapids, currents of at least  5 kts. You should have paddled Deception Pass several times, enough to be fairly comfortable and confident in both ebb and flood currents under moderate conditions. Experience in standing waves a bonus.
- Ability to perform an efficient T rescue in current and waves
- Able to control your boat in winds up to 15 kts from any direction
- Able to maintain balance and control in steep waves up to 3 ft
- Able to stay with a group during a crossing
