Sea Kayak - Stretch & Reach Islands

This is a student paddle for the Tacoma Sea Kayak Basic Course. The paddle will start and finish at Allyn Waterfront Park in Allyn Washington. We will circumnavigate both Stretch and Reach Islands in a figure 8, inside Reach, outside Stretch, inside Stretch, then return via the outside of Reach. Rescues will be practiced during the paddle to fulfill student paddle requirements. Priority will be given to Tacoma Students.

We will meet at Allyn Waterfront Park in Allyn, WA at 8:00 am. Copy and Paste the following coordinates in your map package to locate the park.  (-122.82713471315319, 47.384285040458)

We will load boats and be ready to meet at 8:45. If you need more time arrive earlier. We will have a brief shore meeting and launch at 9:00 am.

We will take a short shore break at Fair Harbor Marina if needed. Lunch will be at Stretch Point SP. We will take time to practice rescues, both partner and self before we are done for the day, so dress for immersion, including headwear. You may use goggles and nose plugs for this activity

Expect to be back at the park by mid-afternoon. We will have a beach debrief to go over and collect paddle sheets.

Required Equipment

These eight essentials plus The Ten Essentials are required on all sea kayaking trips.  All but the whistle and clothing should be provided with any kayak rental.

  1. Floatation in both ends of the kayak
  2. U.S. Coast Guard approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD)
  3. Paddle
  4. Spray skirt
  5. Bilge pump with floatation
  6. Self-rescue paddle float
  7. Waterproof whistle
  8. Dry suit. If the weather is warm a wet suit may be worn with prior permission. No shorty wetsuits. Farmer Jane/John wetsuits will require an insulating upper layer and a paddle jacket.
