Trip
Sea Kayak - Snohomish River
Join us for a leisurely 7+ nMi paddle around Spencer Island in the heart of the Snohomish River Estuary, an ecosystem formed by mixing of freshwater from the Snohomish River and seawater from Port Gardner Bay. Informed sources say its one of the best places in the region for viewing waterfowl and shorebirds. Deer, coyote, river otter, small mammals and amphibians also rumored to inhabit the large island. A series of dike-top trails run along the perimeter and across the island.

We’ll meet at Langus Park boat ramp at 9:00 AM, located on Smith Island Road, just across from the Everett Animal Shelter and the north of the Everett Rowing Association building.
We will launch promptly at 10:00 AM. If you need more than an hour to prepare your gear, please arrive earlier than 9:00 AM to ensure you’re ready by launch time.
Note: there is no boat launch or parking fee for car-topped kayaks. Just be sure to park in the regular parking spot and not one for a trailer. If you bring a trailer, there is a boat ramp/parking fee of $10 payable by credit card though Everett's Parks and Facilities site: Boat Launches | Everett, WA - Official Website
Our paddle will take us up the Snohomish River to Langus Point where we’ll turn north to go around the east side of the island. At the top we'll go around Otter Island then back down the west side of Spencer Island and back to Langus Boat Ramp.
Bring your favorite waterproof bird and critter identification guides. And maybe binoculars and/or camera along with a way to keep them dry.
The total duration of the trip is expected to be around by 5 hours, including a break of about an hour. We'll aim to be off the water by 3PM.
Paddling Difficulty and Considerations: This is a SKII paddle due to the overall distance, which includes a section of about 1.5 nMi on the way to the island where we'll have some resistance from the main flow of the river current.
The goal of this trip is to explore, see birds and other wildlife, and have a pleasant paddle; not to battle rough seas. If conditions are windy with whitecaps and bumpy water, I will either choose a different route or cancel and reschedule the trip.
