Sea Kayak - Protection Island

Trip

Sea Kayak - Protection Island

We'll head out to explore the edges of this remarkable National Wildlife Refuge. The rich habitats of Protection Island, supported by the surrounding aquatic reserve, are the single most important nesting area for seabirds in the Salish Sea. We'll move at a comfortable pace circumnavigating the island, stopping to observe interesting wildlife along the way.

  • Sea Kayak III
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 8.5 nm
  • Maximum Wind: 15 kts
  • Maximum Waves: 2 ft
  • Maximum Currents: 1.5 kts
  • Pace: 2.5mph

We'll meet Diamond Point Public Boat Launch at 7.45am, so that we are ready to launch by 8.45am

Diamond Point. From US-101 in Gardiner turn north onto Diamond Point Road. Just past the Diamond Point Airstrip, turn left onto North Diamond Shore Lane, then right onto Beach Drive to Diamond Point.

All the property in the area is private property. The local property owner on west side of water access told the mountaineers  it is okay to park diagonally between stop sign and his driveway in front of the three car garage (see aerial view). There's limited room for parking. Please park six or fewer cars here (carpool where possible).

COVID vaccination is required.

We'll launch from Diamond point heading west and handrail the coast until we come to Thompson Spit. We'll then cross to Kanem Point and circumnavigate Protection Island. There is a 200-yard buffer around the island to ensure nesting seabirds and resting marine mammals are not disturbed. Here are a few resources that provide more information about this remarkable island. After exploring the edges of this island we'll cross back to Thompson Spit to take a lunch break before returning to our launch area early afternoon.  There are common afternoon winds in the area and since our paddle may include a number of pauses to check out wildlife consider this more casual paddle pace when dressing for warmth and when considering wildlife observation gear (binoculars, camera, etc.).
