Sea Kayak - Kingston to Poulsbo

Paddle from Kingston Marina to Oyster Plant Park (Poulsbo), then shuttle back. A North Puget Sound Paddling Experience badge trip.

  • Sea Kayak II
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 13.0 nm
  • Maximum Wind: 15 kts
  • Maximum Waves: 4 ft
  • Maximum Currents: 4 kts
  • Pace: 3 kt

Meet at Kingston Boat Launch which at 7:45 am to drop off boats.  The Boat launch is is in the large parking lot just west of the ferry terminal.  We'll organize the shuttle there and move some cars to the take-out at Oyster Plant Park; there is limited parking at this location and its a 20 minute drive.  The parking fee at the Kingston Marina is $10 for 12 hours.

Ferry service is very limited just now so if you're comming from the Seattle side you may want to drive around.  At the time of writing, there is a 7:10 am sailing scheduled from Edmonds to Kingston (30 mins) that should work.  HOWEVER, the schedule is changing daily dependent on the condition of the ferry fleet.  Check the sailings on the day of travel.

From the launch in Kingston, we'll paddle, mostly south, to Point Jefferson before turning east into Port Madison.  We'll take a break on Old Man House Park (7.4nm) before heading on through Agate Passage.  At about 11 nm we'll reach Point Bolin and turn northwest into Liberty Bay.  From there it's only 2 nm to Oyster Plant Park.

I estimate launching about 9:15 am, 6 hours on the route, and landing about 3:15 pm (sunset is 4:23 pm).  The trip distance is about 13 nm so we need to maintain an average pace of 2.2 kt.  We should have some current assist by 10. The current in Agate pass maxes out at 2.7 kt at 12:07 pm.  We'll pass through before max and should have get a little push into Liberty Bay.

This trip is one of the North Puget Sound Paddling Experience badge trips.

This is a winter trip.  While conditions can be very good, participants should be prepared for

  • Paddling in wind up to 15kt.  Some upwind but most down or across the wind.
  • Freezing temperatures
  • Moderate rain

If conditions look generally unpleasant (cold, rainy, head-winds) we'll cancel.
